I.Geography

Geographical Feat**es

The United States is located the central part of North America, except Alaska and Hawaii. The country is bordered by Canada to the north,Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, the Aflantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The total area of the country is 9.6 million square kilometers. It is the fo**th largest country in the world in size after Russia,Canada and China. The country includes 50 states and a federal district of Columbia, which is the seat of the federal government. For many years there were 48 states, then in 1959,Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states. The two newest states are separated from the continental United States.Alaska borders northwestern Canada, and Hawaii lies in the central Pacific Ocean.Alaska is the largest in area and Rhode Island(罗得岛州) is the **allest of all the 50 states. On the mainland Texas is the largest state.

The United States can be divided into three distinct areas according to their geographical feat**es: the eastern part, the western part and the Great Plains in between.

The eastern part consists of the highlands formed by the Appalachian Range(阿巴拉契亚山脉). It holds one-sixth of the continental American territory. These highlands are relatively low. the average altitude is only 800 meters above sea l***l.The Appalachian Range begins from the Canadian border and stretches to central Alabama(亚拉巴马州),covering a distance of 3,200 kilometers.

The western part consists of high plateaus(高原)and mountains, which extend from Canada through the western part of the United States to Mexico and f**ther south. The whole area of this part holds ohe-third of the country's territory on the continent. The Rocky Mountains (落基山脉)are a spectacular scene on the western plateaus and stretch more tnan 4,830 kilometers from Montana(蒙大拿州)and Idaho(爱达荷州), through Wyoming(怀俄明州),Utah(犹他州)and Colorado(科罗拉多州),into New Mexico with an average altitude of over 4,000 meters above sea l***l.

The Great Plains lie between the Appalachians in the east and the Rocky Mountains in the west. The Great Plains occupy almost one-third of America's landmass on the continent. They stretch from the Great Lakes in the north to the Gulf of Mexico in the south.

Connected by rivers and canals, the Great Lakes are open to navigation by large steamers and are linked to many inland industrial areas. The famous Niagara Falls(尼亚加拉瀑布) is located on the U.S.-Canadian border between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The Mississippi River is the longest river in North America. It flows from the Lake Itasca (艾塔斯卡湖)in northern Minnesota(明尼苏达州) to the Gulf of Mexico, having a length of 3,780 kilometers and a drai**** area of more than three million square kilometers. It is known to some native American Indians as the "Father of Waters".

The United States can be typically divided into six regions: New England, the Mid-Atlantic States, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest and the West. These regions are formed by history and geography and are shaped by the economy, literat**e and folkways that all the parts of the regions share.

New England consists of six states, Connecticut(康涅狄格州),Maine(缅因州),Massachusetts, New Hampshire(新罕**尔州), Rhode Islaind and Vermont(佛蒙特州).They are all located in the northeastern corner of the country.

II.People

Population人口

The United States is the third most populous nation in the world, ranking behind China and India. According to the U.S. Census B**eau, America has a population of 314 million (2012), with white people constituting about 80%.

The distribution of the population in the U.S. is rather un***n. The most densely populated region is the northeastern part of the country. The region takes up about one quarter of the total land area, but about half of the population is living there. The Great Plains have a comparatively **all population. The South has a population of over 100 million. The West is not densely populated, except for some metropolitan centers like Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Nation of Immigrants**国家

The United States is a nation of http://immigrants.In no other country have as many varied ethnic groups congregated (**) and amalgamated (混合) as they have in America. America is not merely a nation. but a nation of nations. There have been waves of immigrants to the United States d**ing different periods of American history.

The first people on the American continent came from Asia as early as 12,000 years ago. When Columbus arrived in the 15th cent**y, there were perhaps 10 million people called Indians. The Westward Movement (西进运动) meant the destruction of the Native Americans. Today there are about 2.9 million Native Americans in the United States. Poverty and unemployment are the major problems for them, especially on the reservations(居留地).

The majority of American people are descendants of the E**opean immigrants. It is not easy to ascertain the exact time when their ancestors first came to settle. How***r, modern Americans look back to their Pilgrim Fathers, a group of P**itans who came from England in 1620, as a symbol of their origins in this new country.

From the 16th cent**y through the 19th cent**y, about 12 million people were brought to America from African countries as slaves, working on plantations or large farms of the South. Today about 13% of America's population is black.

After the early periods of settlement, the first sharp increase in immigration took place in the 1830s and the 1840s, bringing Northern E**opeans and particularly Irish craft**en displaced by the dreadful poverty of the Great Potato Famine. In the 1890s,another tremendous tide of immigration appeared, this time largely from Southern and Eastern E**ope.

D**ing this period, the United States was changing from a mainly agricult**al society to an industrialized country. Many immigrants settled in cities and worked in factories. Being poor and accustomed to poverty, they were willing to work for very low wages. This made other workers, especially those in labor unions, afraid that the immigrants would lower wage l***ls and take ***s away from them. This opposition finally led to the Immigration Act of 1924 that restricted f**ther immigration, particularly from E**ope Some other groups continued to come and concentrate in different areas-Mexicans in Texas and California and Cubans in Florida. Many recent immigrants are from Central American countries.

In the 19th cent**y, laws limited Asian immigration. Asians in the United States such as Chinese and Japanese met with widespread discrimination. In 1965,the Immigration and Nationality Act Amendments(《**与国籍法修正案》)gave an equal chance to all foreigners seeking entry into the United States regardless of where they came from. In the 1980s, almost half of all immigrants were Asians. Among them, the Chinese Americans have proved to be industrious, intelligent and doing fine today.

The United States is often called a “melting pot”where various racial and ethnic groups are assimilated into the American cult**e. How***r, It has been more recently called a "salad bowl",which means that immigrants of different backgrounds mix harmoniously, but at the same time keep their distinct cult**e and customs.

Racial Assimilation

The dominant American cult**e is English-speaking,Western E**opean Protestant and middle-class in character. The first immigrants formed the land's basic cult**al values as freedom, equality and desire to work hard for a higher standard of living.

In its early years the United States was a successful “melting pot".The original settlers were of similar background coming largely from Northern E**ope, and were easily assimilated into society Althonah the later immigrants were from different backgrounds. they tended to be drawn together.

As time went on, the characteristics of the dominant maiority got solidified and determined to what extent other grouns were accepted. A large number of immigrants with significantly different characteristics tended to be viewed as a threat to basic American values and the American way of life. D**ing the late 19th and 20th cent**ies, most immigrants came from poverty-stricken nations. For them, assimilation was much harder because of the differences between their cult**e and language and those of the established Americans. These new immigrants, feeling lost in strange s**rounding, clustered together in close-knit communities. Soon, many cities had ethnic neighborhoods such as "Chinatown".

Various American agencies, public and private, offered English instruction and citizenship classes to new immigrants to assist in their assimilation and becoming American citizens. It took quite some time for the adult immigrants to learn, while the children quickly learned the American ways by imitating their schoolmates.

Through new opportunities and new rewards the immigrants came to accept most of the values of the dominant American cult**e and were, in t**n,accepted by the great majority of Americans. The immigrants now have a much stronger feeling about being an American.

The immigrants' attitude toward their old-world background has changed markedly, especially since the mid-20th cent**y. People of various origins have become interested in their foreign past and proud of their cult**al heritage.Co**ses have been or***ized for them to study their native language and cult**e that they once tried to forget. Books are now published to acquaint young people with their foreign ancestors. Many of today's descendants of immigrants respect the cult**e that they had once rejected.F**thermore, they beli*** that the United States, a land of immigrants, could benefit from retaining its diverse cult**al backgrounds. The contributions made by those people have ****ed America achi*** its rapid social and economic d***lopment.
